Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has lifted the Emergencies Act, just two days after its use was supported in a vote in the House of Commons but before the Senate could vote to confirm the justification of it.

The government invoked the act a week ago Monday, giving police sweeping powers to arrest or remove protesters who were blockading the streets of Ottawa as well border crossings across the country. The use of the act has been criticized globally and the Senate was not provided solid justification by the Liberal government in debate.

The protests sprang up out of the truckers’ convoy to Ottawa to protest cross-border COVID-19 vaccination mandates.
