Finally Race Ready Mopar 361 Big Block | Restoring A 1973 Dodge Charger Part 8 | Mopar Monday |
We are in the end game. From starting the build a few weeks ago to finally getting race ready, the big block mopar 361 has come a long. We are now in the culmination of the work that has been stacked up until now, are we are finally ready to hit the road. Bonus cameo footage at the end of the video for anyone who watches all the way through.
This week we are finally assembling the last parts of the dodge charger. Although this is not the last version of my build, I am at a pretty safe stopping point where I can at least start to drive the car. In the following episode I will be installing a set of temporary wheels and tires along with the new edelbrock manifold as well. The fittings for my 750 should be arriving next week also so we should be ready to hit the road by next week!
Today is finally the day that we start putting the old mopar 361 big block back together. Last week we took the little engine down to the bare short block and in this last week we managed to install a brand new set of 440 source alluminum heads, Although I was not too impressed with the specs of the heads, the fact of the matter is that they WILL make more power, run cooler and lighten up the car by over 50lbs on the front nose of the car. I'm happy that we were able to bring this mopar big block back to 2022 with a more modern head design than the one it had before and it has all of the common upgrades needed to make this a reliable engine. In the next episode we will finish assembling the engine and hopefully it will be road worthy by then so stay tuned for more big block action next monday!

In this weeks episode we will be tearing into the Mopar 361 big block before we take it to the dyno to get a baseline run. This 361 is from 1962 which means it did not come with factory hardened valve seats. Because of that, running that engine with unleaded fuel could cause the valves to sink into the head and begin to cause serious damage. Because of that, I will be swapping to a different set of heads that will allow me to retain the performance of the close chamber 361 heads but with the modern upgrades of the newer 440 heads. I will go through what it takes to make the transition as well as the problems that you might have when building an older big block mopar.
Today will be trying to start the big block mopar in my 1973 Dodge charger. This is part 4 of my build and I've finally put some actual time into making this thing run. After realizing that the car did not have a battery or carburetor I had to borrow a battery from my 1975 Dodge W100 as well as do a quick refresh on a newer holley 750 vacuum secondary carburetor. After I was able to get the nessesary parts installed, I managed to pour some fuel down the throat and attempt to get it started. That car did not take too much to get it going and soon it was alive and well. In the next episode I will be tearing down the 361 and get it ready for the races.
Today we will be going through all the different options when it comes to building up the 361 mopar. I also go into detail as to why I would like to build the 361 instead of the bigger 440. Your comments and concerns are welcome! As of right now I am looking at just building up the 361 with just replacing as much as I can, with aluminum parts. Doing so will do 2 things, lighten up the front end and also make it run cooler. Aside from that I would like to run a roller can and lifters but we will take this one step at a time
Today we will be going through the entire build of my 1973 Dodge charger and everything that has been done to it so far. Quick run down on whats been taken care of. New balljoints, steering linkage, transmissions, tune up parts, ignition and wiring. This is supposed to be a very simple and basic build so we will see how crazy we can get it!
Today we will be going over all the different engine/transmission options before we start tearing things apart, its so easy to just start removing the engine or transmission and have big plans but if you dont know exactly where you are going, it could cost you some big mistakes. We will be going over some options like the mopar big block 361, 383, 400, 413 and 440 as well as the stroker 413 and 451 combos as well. We also decide what the general game plan is going to be and going over the goals for the build.
