Bimini is the closest island of the Bahamas to mainland US and has a population under 2,000. The island is rumored to have mystical properties and was referenced in Juan Ponce de Leon's search for the Fountain of Youth. In part of the swamp covering the island a pool of cool water high in minerals lies at the end of a series of limestone tunnels. The island is also known as a vacation destination and was once a pivotal point for the rum running trade during prohibition.
