The western entrance of Santee maintains its rich history of the Native American People, the Kumeyaay, and also Spanish exploration in the late 18th century. Exactly seven miles west of present day Big Rock Park, is where the natives and spanish explorers constructed the Old Mission Dam in a part of the San Diego River. Completed in 1779, the dam then provided water to the Mission de Alcala. The land was later parceled into land grants in return for the Spanish soldiers' work.
Then, as we know from earlier episodes, the land was sold to American settler George A. Cowles in part of his four thousand acre purchase in 1877. Make sure to check out our first episode for further history and info on the Cowles family purchase and development!
Big Rock Park is located where Big Rock and Mesa Road converge in the west end of Santee, and is the immediate neighbor to Chet F. Harritt School.
The park includes the following amenities:
Barbecue Grills and Picnic shelters, each available for reservation to throw get togethers.
A playground and jungle gym for age groups 5 and under, to 6 and up.
A designated off leash area for dogs to run around and enjoy the foliage.
And finally, the widespread athletic amenities such as pickleball, tennis, basketball, and sand volleyball courts.
With Cowles Mountain and Mission Trails on the other side, there is another not so secret but alternative entrance for hikers to use that involves additional mileage to the peak and one of a kind view for all outdoorsy people to enjoy. Make sure to bring extra water, and take a few more breaks because the trek from that entrance can be quite enduring!
Also located within Big Rock Park is the Santee Teen Center. The center is a great place for teens to hang out, study, and build relationships for their entry into adulthood.L
Near the front entrance of Big Rock Park, is also the entryway to Chet F. Harritt. It is one of nine schools in the city of Santee and part of the Santee School District that includes levels from Kindergarten through the eighth grade.
The Cheetahs have a great environment and teaching staff to learn, make friends, and make what will be some of their fondest memories.
The Santee Pioneer Little League which was established in 1958, is the oldest little league baseball facility in District 41. Originally located off of Mission Gorge Road next to Santee Elementary School,(NO LONGER THERE) the fields were moved to Big Rock Park and Chet F. Harrit.
The league is available for all children ages four and up. During the spring the ballparks are filled with parents and players, so grab your glove and some snacks and enjoy the outdoors with some baseball in the Spring and or some winter ball for those who love playing on the diamond.
In conclusion, the neighborhood of Big Rock is located just off of the 52, so any commute is literally just a freeway away. Cross the major free way to enjoy areas like the Carlton Oaks Country Club, or Santee Lakes. Any commercial needs are located in the area too. Use the mother nature provided in the west for walks, hikes, and views that only the outdoors can provide.
While this can be great, the community also offers the many amenities and so much more with just a walk away, and very few communities can offer what Big Rock does within a mile radius, and so much more!
