Scientists believe the rock was an asteroid that traveled at about 35,000 miles per hour. and was about a foot across. That small piece of space rock created a fireball 10 times brighter than a full moon. When it broke apart it created a sonic boom, shock waves, and energy the equivalent of 3 tons of TNT that left pieces falling to the ground at 200-300 mph. That is just from a 1 foot across rock, as many space rocks are much much larger.
