Tetris requires players to stack blocks of various shapes and sizes that fall from above. The objective is to stack them in such a way that they connect to one another, forming complete horizontal lines across the screen. It vanishes once a complete line has been formed. The number of lines a player can remove at one time determines how many points they earn. To keep their stack from growing too large, players must constantly construct these disappearing lines. It's game over when the stack reaches the top of the screen. Tetris is a classic puzzle game with no offensive content and multiple difficulty levels to appeal to players of all skill levels. It is suitable for children aged 6 and up.

As more and more blocks fall, players have a limited amount of time to arrange the blocks. Players have less space to work with as each puzzle piece falls from above, and if the pieces stack all the way to the top of the screen, the game is over. As the levels progress, the pieces fall faster, forcing players to quickly devise a strategy and efficiently manipulate each piece.

In Tetris, the blocks available to players are chosen at random, and a current block may not exactly fit with any other block on the screen. Players attempting to create a specific block pattern must be careful to place pieces in the best possible location, which is not always a perfect fit. If players become too focused on finding "the right block" for their stack, they will be quickly overwhelmed by unsorted stacks of blocks. The faster players adapt to random pieces, the more lines they can clear and the higher their score will be.
