77 Year Old Tom Irby Flying A Nighttime Illuminated Kite after the 2022 Rockport Kite Festival

Tom is a member of the Coastal Bend Flying Circus (Facebook Group) and has been flying drones since he was 40 years old. He's now 77 years old and still actively flying and building kites. His daughter gifted him a kite for his 40th birthday and he's had the kite flying bug ever since.Show more

Originally, the plan for tonight was for multiple nighttime kite flyers to participate in night flying demonstration after the 2022 City of Rockport Kite Festival, but the other flyers developed problems with their kites, or decided the winds were too strong for flying. Tom agreed to fly one of his kites and talk to us about the experiences he has had flying kites..

The winds were gusting to much for us to safely fly a drone, over 30mph, so we chose to record using our GoPro Hero 10 camera instead The winds were actually pushing us around while standing on the ground, so I could imagine what might have happened to a drone higher up in the air.

Our friend (and visual observer for the day) Jeff Dillon, helped with the kite when Tom requested his assistance. Normally Jeff is only seen in the background as the drone is launched or landing.
