Brazil is ordering more gripen jets in consideration of another major purchase.

Chile Brazil will order four Saab-Embraer F-39E jets in addition to the 36 aircraft already purchased under a $ 4.7 billion contract in 2014. The country is also considering ordering another batch of at least 30 F-39E fighters-locally designated JAS 39E Gripen NG.

The Swedish Gripen NG was officially selected in 2013 to equip the Brazilian Air Force with advanced fourth-generation fighters under the FX program. This decision followed a lengthy process that began in the mid-1990s, with some delays and was suspended by President Fernando Enrique Cardoso in 2002. This decree was revived in 2008 by President Luis Dasylva.

General Carlos de Almeida Baptista Jr., head of the Brazilian Air Force, announced his additional orders at the April 22 celebration of a combat flight at the Santa Cruz Air Force Base in Rio de Janeiro.

During the event, two F-39s received from Sweden earlier this month were presented, increasing the number of F-39s delivered to Brazil to five. Full delivery of 36 aircraft is expected to be completed by 2024, but some experts believe it may take longer.
