Is our soul attached to our consciousness?

17th-century philosopher René Descartes' defining statement was "I think, therefore I am." However, this seems to imply that those who are unconscious or experiencing some type of mental dysfunction cease to exist and lose their identity. In this case, how can we argue for the sanctity of human life if we only use consciousness as evidence for a soul?
