How to UNTANGLE and RELEASE a bird from a fishing line.

Birds love following fishing boats to find an easy meal. It is common for birds such as pelicans, terns, and cormorants to get caught by hooks and tangled in fishing line. Especially in Florida. Some of these birds will shadow a fishing boat all day waiting for their chance to get a free baitfish. In this case I accidentally got tangled with a Lesser Crested Tern while fish in Fort De Soto Park, Florida. It is important to handle the birds with care and gently untangle and unhook them. They have fragile bodies that are light weight which can be easily injured. When releasing birds be sure to point them in a direction that will cause them to fly away from people and fishing lines.
