Perhaps the only thing more impressive than the Asian millipede’s hundreds of legs in action is the role species like this one play in maintaining soil health. As they move throughout their range, millipedes shred the remnants of crops and other organic matter, mixing it into the soil as they go. This action gives fungi and bacteria a greater surface area to work on, speeding up the breakdown of organic material, which ultimately produces more fertile soil.
