Today is a first for us here at CigarScore HQ. Today, for the first time, we're reviewing a cigar from PDR Cigars, the PDR 1878 Natural Roast Cafe Toro. I saw my friends over at the Texas Cigar Roadshow talking about this cigar, so I thought I'd smoke one to review.

The first thing I noticed about the PDR 1878 Natural Roast Cafe Toro, before even getting it out of the cellophane, was the aroma of a Tootsie Roll. Lucky for me, I like that smell. There's also a shaggy, closed foot and a pigtail tip on this cigar.

Moistening the tip of the cigar with my tongue before cutting it, I tasted a blast of sweetness that was fairly offputting.

Once I got the PDR 1878 Natural Roast Cafe Toro lit and going, the draw remained a little tight and the super-sweetened tip was fairly offputting. Let's see how this goes.

Through the middle of the cigar, the draw remained tight, but the burn was almost perfect. The flavors in the middle third became a little sour and unpleasant that made my otherwise delicious coffee taste bitter.

Final Thoughts

My main complaint about this PDR 1878 Natural Roast Cafe Toro is the same complaint I have about other “infused” or “flavored” cigars like the ACID from Drew Estate.

NOTE: My problem with these brands is that they typically don't use good tobacco with the infusion; they use lesser quality tobacco. And, what you end up with is an icing-covered dog turd under the guise of “infusion.”

Regarding this PDR, the underlying tobacco isn't bad. It's also not good (but I've had worse). And, once the infusion dissolved or faded away (or I smoked through it) what I was left with was uninteresting and boring.

If you like tobacco, I'd suggest you skip this one. So, the PDR 1878 Natural Roast Cafe Toro earns a CigarScore 2.
