Road Trip - Historic Roads in Croatia (Pt.2): Jozefina Road - Karlovac to Senj - 4K UHD

Jozefina (Josephina) road is one of the four famous historic roads (Lujzijana, Karolina, Jozefina, Rudolfina) which cross mountainous regions of Croatia (Gorski Kotar and Lika) and connect continental and coastal parts of Croatia. It was built from 1775 to 1779 by the emperor Joseph II Habsburg, after which Jozefina road was named. It connects Karlovac (an important continental crossroad) and Senj (a historical northern Adriatic port). In fact, there are two historic landmarks which mark its beginning and end: Karlovac Obelisk which says "Iosephinae Principium" - meaning "The Beginning of Josephina" in Latin) and the stone-built entrance to Senj - known as The Jozefina Gate as it marks Jozefina's end by saying: "Iosephinae Finis".

Jozefina was commissioned to be built after it was realized that the older Karolina road (built in 1728) wasn't meeting regional transport requirements any more. As this important route connects fertile Pannonian Plain with the Adriatic Sea by crossing the rugged Dinaric Alps, parts of it were in use even in Roman times. Established as a complete road in the 18th century, it got its modern-day asphalt look by the middle of the 20th century. Today this old lady enjoys its well deserved retirement, as the A1 highway, completed in the early 21st century, took up most of the traffic. Nowadays Jozefina is mostly used as a local road, a scenic biking route or a casual alternative to the highway for those who are not in a particular hurry. Personally, we think that it is the best way to travel from continental to coastal Croatia and so we often use this beautiful historic road. :)
