California Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists stock Echo Lake, El Dorado County, with trophy-sized Lahontan cutthroat trout brood stock from nearby Heenan Lake. The stocking is part of CDFW’s efforts to create a Lahontan cutthroat trout sport fishery at the lake near South Lake Tahoe. The fast-growing Lahontan cutthroat trout is the only trout native to the Lake Tahoe Basin and is the principal sport fish species available to anglers at Echo Lake. The brood fish join some 20,000 juvenile Lahontan cutthroat trout stocked annually at Echo Lake.
