How to diagnose and fix a lawnmower fuel problem

The riding mower wouldn't start unless I poured a little gas into the carb. I figured it was fuel related so I started with the easiest to hardest possible solutions. Of course, it was the hardest solution but I removed the carb, degunked it, took my torch tip cleaner and reamed out all the orifices and sprayed some carb cleaner in them. then I blew them out with High pressure air and reassembled. It started right up and runs great now.
