Lugano is a Swiss city and municipality in the canton of Ticino. It is part of the Lugano District. It is the largest city in both Ticino and southern Switzerland's Italian-speaking region. Lugano has a population of 62,315 people (as of December 2020) and an urban agglomeration of about 150,000 people. It is the ninth largest city in Switzerland.
The city is notable for being located on Lake Lugano at its widest point, occupying the entire harbor of Lugano alongside the neighbouring town of Paradiso. The municipality's boundaries includes a significantly greater area on both sides of the lake, as well as numerous isolated villages.
The Lugano Prealps encircle the Lugano region, with the latter spreading across much of the Sottoceneri region, Ticino's and Switzerland's southernmost territory. The municipality shares an international border with Italy on both its western and eastern sides.
