Here in the Kichwa community of Misahualli, Ecuador, deep in the Amazon rainforest, a large palm-grub, Rhynchophorus palmarum, larva of the black weevil beetle, is a staple food. It is rich in vitamins, protein, and is even said to be an effective medicine for coughs and asthma. Nearly always consumed with gauyuasa, another amazing medicinal staple (see upcoming Medicinal Plant Tea's of the Amazon video), this fat, gyrating, little blob of wonderment is exceedingly delicious whether cooked pincho style (grilled on a stick) or maito (boiled in a leaf).
I decided to Californicate the chonta and make a West Coast-style wrap, and share the recipe with you guys. We hope you enjoy this bug-buffet as much as we did!
