On January 29, 2019, Jussie Smollett reported a hate crime committed against him by two white men wearing MAGA hats, who placed a noose around his neck and doused him in bleach. Later investigation showed that Smollett orchestrated the hate crime using his personal trainers in an attempt to gain publicity.

In 2019, Smollett was allowed to seek a deferred prosecution agreement under dubious circumstances.

By February 2020, a special prosecutor had been appointed and indicted Smollett for multiple counts of Felony Disorderly Conduct. His trial began in November 2021 and Smollett was found guilty of all counts on December 9, 2021.

He faces sentencing on March 10, 2020.
