Good desires that change into needs affect us adversely. When these desires for love or acceptance control my heart, I'm dependent on my spouse (or another friend) to satisfy my longings, making my spouse my functional god. If my functional god does not cooperate, I will look for other ways to feel better, including demeaning my functional god.
