As a matter of fact, we have a few black walnut trees in our side yard, but didn't know until recently, that they were edible. A cup will yield approximately 12 grams of protein! Black walnuts also have medicinal uses as well. The nuts are rich in essential fatty acids, beneficial in the fight against heart disease, diabetes, and other ailments. They do contain a toxin known as juglone, but once cleansed of it, they can be dried, cracked, and enjoyed.
