Welcome To "Sounds To Sleep To"
The Legend of Orpheus and Eurydice
Orpheus was given a lyre by his father, Apollo, who taught him how to play it. "Nothing could resist Orpheus' exquisite music, neither enemies nor beasts," it was stated. Orpheus fell in love with Eurydice, a beautiful and graceful woman with whom he married and lived happily for a time. When Hymen was sent to bless the couple, he foresaw that their perfection would not last.
Eurydice was strolling in the forest with the Nymphs shortly after this prophecy. In some versions of the narrative, Aristaeus, a shepherd, spotted her and was seduced by her beauty, so he approached her and began chasing her. Eurydice was only dancing with the Nymphs, according to other versions of the narrative. She was bitten by a snake while running or dancing and died instantaneously. Orpheus used his lyre to sing his pain and was able to move everything in the world, living or not; both people and gods became aware of his sorrow and grief.
Orpheus eventually chose to visit Hades to see his wife. Any other mortal would have died, but Orpheus, protected by the gods, journeyed to Hades and arrived at the Stygian realm, passing past ghosts and souls of unknown individuals. Cerberus, the three-headed dog, was also drawn to him because of his music. He appeared in front of Hades, the Greek deity of the underworld, and Persephone, his wife.

Orpheus attracted Hades by playing his lyre. Orpheus was instructed by Hades that he may take Eurydice back with him on one condition: she would have to walk behind him out of the underworld's caves, and he would not be able to look at her while they walked.

Orpheus was overjoyed; he thanked the gods and left to return to the living world, believing it to be a simple chore for a patient man like himself. He began to believe the gods had duped him when he couldn't hear Eurydice's footsteps. Eurydice might have been behind him, but only as a shadow, forced to return to the light in order to reclaim her complete womanhood. Orpheus lost his trust and turned to discover Eurydice behind him only a few steps from the escape, sending her back to be bound with Hades forever.

Orpheus attempted to return to the underworld but was unable to do so, presumably due to the fact that a person cannot visit Hades twice while living. He played a mournful song with his lyre, according to several versions of the narrative, pleading for death so that he could be permanently rejoined with Eurydice. He was either ripped apart by monsters or slain by a horde of Maenads in a fit of rage. His head was completely intact, but it continued to sing as it floated in the waves before washing up on Lesbos. According to another story, Zeus struck Orpheus with lightning because he was afraid he might divulge the secrets of the underworld to mortals. The Muses, according to this story, decided to save his head and maintain it among the living to sing eternally, charm everyone with his melodies. They also made his lyre into a constellation in the sky.
