The average salary for a comic book artist is $36,000 per year

On average the manga artist will make $30-$50 dollars per page. The average chapter is about 20 pages and $30 multiplied by 20 pages is $600. That’s good money if the mangaka are publishing weekly but if its biweekly that is only $1200 per month as oppose to $2400 per month. Keep in mind that all these manga artist OWN their titles. So its not like they are working for a comic book company getting paid per page, they have the right to their manga. Which leads to royalties that they collect.

So along with what they make per page, mangakas also get royalties for their manga volume sales. Usually a manga would have about 7 to 8 chapters (totaling to 200 pages). A manga volume sells for about $10. The manga artist who is the rightful owner of the intellectual property gets 8-10% of the royalties. So that is about 0.80 cents to $1 of the royalty before tax price. That means if the first volume of a manga sells 100,000 (which is the usual sales figure of a manga) then the artist gets $80,000 to $100,000. Think about it. A manga that sells 100,000 makes about one million dollars. Very attractive numbers. So once the mangaka has ten chapters or more, the publisher will publish a volume.

Once a manga becomes an anime, the artist will get about $1400 to $1800 per episode of the anime. The more popular the anime is, the higher the royalties. So Naruto for example, Akira Toriyama is probably making about $100,000 per episode of the Naruto anime.

From DVD sales and merchandise sales, the artist will get 0.5% of the sales price before taxes. Not many people buy DVDs now a days but lets say if an anime DVD sells 50,000 copies at about $20 per unit, that would be $1 million in sales and the artist gets $25,000 out that (including merchandise).
