Low Water River Fishing / Summer River Fishing For Northern Pike, Longnose Gar & Smallmouth Bass

Summer river fishing for northern pike, Longnose Gar & Smallmouth Bass in low water river fishing conditions is an opportunity that can be great to take advantage of! One advantage to low water river fishing is being able to wade to hard to reach areas. Also when the water is low you are fishing to a captive audience as fish congregate in deeper water and are easy to make a presentation to when in shallow water. Longnose gar fishing is one of my favorite types of fishing lately. Longnose gar are hard to catch and are certainly a worthy opponent. I lose gar all the time when targeting them and while catfishing. I have hooked into many long nose gar with lures as well but almost always lose them because longnose gar have a super bony mouth with minimal flesh to hook into. Gar fishing is also super fun because gar are the coolest looking fish you can get your hands on in these parts. Gar have a weird tough leathery skin that reminds me of an armored snake with fins and an aligator face... I have only successfully caught one gar when intentionally gar fishing but I catch them on lures when I am pike fishing all the time. speaking of pike fishing, river fishing for northern pike is one of my other favorite things. I do a lot of Michigan pike fishing and on this day I got a nice one but I wasnt rolling the video camera and I didn't get a picture :( but jason caught 2 northern pike as well! the smallmouth bass were active as well but we didn't catch any good sized ones.

Fishing for river monsters on the grand river is a treat for mid michigan fisherman.
