Resurrection Sunday – HE IS RISEN!
Matthew 27 and 28; John 20; 1 Corinthians 15:6

 Imagine: You are there at the tomb on the day of the Resurrection!
• This is THE DAY that changes everything!
• It changes everything in creation, history, etc…

• These are the (7) things we would observe:
o The Soldiers – 1 unit = 16 soldiers (4 shifts of 4)
 Jesus claimed he’d come back from the dead

• Matthew 27:63-66
63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.

• Matthew 28:4,11-15
4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men… 11 While they were going, behold, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all that had taken place. 12 And when they had assembled with the elders and taken counsel, they gave a sufficient sum of money to the soldiers 13 and said, “Tell people, ‘His disciples came by night and stole him away while we were asleep.’ 14 And if this comes to the governor's ears, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.” 15 So they took the money and did as they were directed. And this story has been spread among the Jews to this day.

 If they were all asleep …
• How do they know who stole the body???

o The Missing Seal – a rope secured by wax seal on both sides.
 Sealed by roman authority to say its contents are accounted for and shall not be removed.

o The Missing Stone – Massive slab of granite (1.5-2 tons).
 Keeps out animals and ensures the prolonged dignity of the departed
 Cut a groove in front of the tomb – Roll the stone back – Chock it – Finish the Internment – Return the stone – Seal the tomb…

• Mathew 28:1-3
“1Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.”

• John 20:1
“1Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb.”

o The Burial Clothes – Wrappings and Face Shroud
 John 20:3-8
3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed;

o The Disciples – Hiding and then emboldened (vs 19)
 John 20:24-28
24 Now Thomas, one of the twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” 26 Eight days later, his disciples were inside again, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!”

o The Sightings – Too numerous – Too Diverse – Too accessible
 1 Corinthians 15:6
“6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep.”

• What does all this matter???
o Because Jesus is Risen … It effects every aspect of your life!
 PAST: Forgiveness – Redemption
• We are separated from God - He is Holy and we are not!
o John 3:16 – Romans 3:23 – Romans 6:23
 Jesus paid the penalty for your sin!
 PRESENT: Justification – Sanctification
• Because He is Risen – We are filled with His power!
o The same power
 FUTURE: Salvation – Glorification
• Can I KNOW that I am going to go to heaven when I die?
o YES – I KNOW I AM!

• 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
