Time to wean the bucklings!

It’s weaning day for our eight week old Nigerian dwarf bucklings! These two boys (we call them Jethro and Gibbs) are sweet as can be but it’s time to move them into the buck pen with the rest of the boys. Before we get to the goats we also walk through the garden real quick to show y’all how it’s going (spoiler alert: it ain’t real great).

Our plan is to sell Jethro and Gibbs intact to another farm. They seem to have a great disposition and have some other desirable traits and we think they’d make good breeding stock. But because they can breed with other goats as early as eight weeks old we need to separate them from mom and the rest of the girls. So they’ll move in with Benji, our resident buck, and his wether buddy Clyde, until it’s time for them to move on to their next home.

In the garden, things aren’t going quite so well. This is our first attempt at a garden and we got a late start on preparing the ground, so we knew we would be fighting an uphill battle with the grass. We do, however, have some corn, okra, and tomatoes coming in, and we are looking forward to enjoying what we get out of it. We may have some other stuff coming in in the raised beds, too, so we’ll see what happens!

Perhaps the thing I’m most excited about is the discovery I made about my transplanted oak tree. It never did leaf out in the spring but today I noticed that what I thought was a weed growing near the base was actually some new growth from the tree! The tree is alive and I’m so happy to see it.
