How to Naturally Reduce Stress
Stress is a common issue and most people experience stress at some point in their lives. Stress can come from many things, including relationships, money and traumatic events. Stress can cause physical side effects such as headaches, muscle or chest pain, fatigue, upset stomach, insomnia and frequent urination.
Stress can affect your mood and behaviors. Particularly, it can cause anxiety, restlessness, depression, irritability, anger and social withdrawal. Stress can even impact your physical health. Too much stress for too long can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and heart disease, just to name a few. It can make it very difficult to enjoy life.
Stress is often not able to be avoided, so it is important to find ways to deal with it. Some of these ways are to think positively, make lifestyle changes, eat healthy and use some home remedies.
Here are our top five home remedies for stress relief:
1. Slow and Deep Breathing
One of the most important things you can do in a stressful situation is to take slow, deep breaths. When you breathe deeply, you allow more oxygen to enter your body. Taking 15 to 30 minutes to sit and take slow, deep breaths daily can significantly reduce your stress levels since deep breathing helps to calm your mind and body. Getting more oxygen also allows you to think more clearly and deal with stress more easily.
2. Epsom Salt
Another useful tool to fight stress is Epsom salt. Stress can cause your body to have low levels of magnesium and to raise your adrenaline levels. Magnesium is important to your body because it helps to increase serotonin, which is a chemical in your brain that helps your mood.
Since Epsom salt is high in magnesium, it helps to restore balance in your body and raise your magnesium levels. By doing so, it helps to reduce your stress, helps you to relax and eases your mind of anxiety, insomnia, irritability and any irregular heartbeats.
3. Chamomile Tea
Certain herbs can help with reducing your stress levels, such as chamomile. Chamomile relaxes your central nervous system because of its calming characteristics. Chamomile relaxes your muscles, lowers your anxiety, and helps you to sleep better. You can even consume up to four cups of chamomile tea per day to keep your stressors down.
4. Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha is another herb that is helpful in reducing stress. It is known by two other names: Indian Ginseng and Withania Somnifera. There was a study conducted in 2012, which found that ashwagandha root is helpful in lowering your stress and anxiety levels.
It does this by lowering the amount of a certain hormone, called cortisol. It can also help you deal with stress more effectively. Also, ashwagandha can make your nervous system strong, boost your energy level, fight tiredness and help you to sleep better.
5. Green Tea
Another thing that is effective for calming your stress is green tea. Green tea has an amino acid, called L-Theanine, that helps to produce alpha brain waves. When you have more alpha brain waves, it reduces your stress level, encourages you to relax and improves your focus and alertness.
L-Theanine also helps your body to develop gamma-aminobutyric acid, more easily known as GABA. GABA is a neurotransmitter that is in your brain and helps you to relax.
6. Passionflower
Passionflower is another effective tool to manage stress. It is an old folk remedy that can also help your brain increase GABA levels. This helps to lower your stress, anxiety and panic attacks.
Passionflower can be found in multiple forms, including: liquid, tincture and tablets. Be sure to always ask your doctor before deciding to add a daily supplement to your diet. Any supplement can negatively interact with certain medications.
It is very important to note that small children and any women who are pregnant or nursing must not consume this herb.
7. B Vitamins
Other helpful supplements that can help your stress levels and elevate your mood are B vitamins. There are eight B vitamins in total: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. They help your brain and nervous system to function properly. They also help you to relax, de-stress and have more energy.
