The May 22, 1960 Belgian Congo general elections

May 22, 1960, 2 months before the Independence of the country, the first General elections are held in the Belgian Congo. The MNC-L (Mouvement National Congolais), led by Patrice Lumumba wins with 521,187 votes (23.44% of the general vote) the most seats. Voter turnout is 81.8%.
