THE STORY OF LIZZIE VELASQUEZ

An inspiring life story. From an illness that led her to be known as "the ugliest woman in the world" to a successful life and career. A woman with determination and courage, Lizzie Velasquez is what we all should be.

Lizzie Velasquez became known as being the "ugliest woman in the world" because of a video posted on youtube that carried the same title. Lizzie herself discovered the video while surfing the Internet when she came across the grotesque joke, which exposed the girl and her disease in a cruel way.

Lizzie is 25 years old and was born with an extremely rare disease, a disease that has, to date, been identified in only three people in the world. The disease that affects Lizzie prevents her body from absorbing fat. Because of this, she is more fragile and susceptible to all sorts of diseases. To stay healthy, Lizzie needs to eat every 20 minutes, because since her body does not absorb fat, she does not have a store of nutrients, which would help protect her against viruses and diseases. Because of this, she must eat constantly. Today, at the age of 25, she, however, has never managed to pass the 30 kilogram mark, and she ages faster than other people. Even though she eats all day long and has a huge appetite, Lizzie almost died when she was 19 of severe anemia, because of her inability to absorb vitamins or nutrients. Very thin, she is a weak woman, and although she does not have physical therapy, she walks without much difficulty, but slowly. One of the implications of the disease has also caused Lizzie to become blind in her right eye.

When Lizzie was born, her parents were warned that if she survived, she would not gain weight and would hardly speak, walk, or do anything else as a normal child. Her parents decided to take the little girl home and believe that everything would be fine. Some call it luck, others faith, but the fact is that Lizzie managed to overcome enormous barriers since childhood and lead a life like everyone else, of course, as much as she could.

She went to school, faced bullying and all kinds of prejudice and discrimination, grew up, worked, studied more, graduated from the University of Texas Media, and today is an independent, successful woman and author of three books. She gives self-help talks and lectures. Lizzie talks, in one of her videos, that she has decided to let the things she has define her, and not the things she doesn't, i.e....the beauty standard imposed by society.

She writes self-help books to teach the rest of the world how to face situations that usually leave us terrified. And the "ugliest woman in the world" has managed to be what thousands of beautiful people are not: confident. And because of this Lizzie is a beautiful woman, and one who we are privileged to be inspired by her story of determination and achievement. She has conquered scenarios that many still struggle to conquer. She has put up a brave face, she has gone head high, albeit with fear, and followed every step to have a much better life than many of us. A life much better than many who walk by and pity her and giggle. Lizzie is much more than that. And she proved it to the world. And she did it in very good style and with very good humor.

Lizzie Velasquez has two other siblings, both of whom are completely healthy. Lizzie also collaborates with Genetics scientists at the University of Texas who are studying her mysterious illness. The doctors suspect that she has a small alteration in our genetic code, the DNA. If they can discover the diseased gene, or set of genes in Lizzie, they can understand and improve studies against obesity.
