CITY DESTROYED BY HEAVY RAIN | 100 UNDERGROUND DEAD PEOPLE | PETRÓPOLIS BRAZIL | 15_ 02_2022 #1

Extremely heavy rain hit the city of Petropolis, causing severe floods and landslides. Houses in hillside neighbourhoods were destroyed and cars swept away as floodwaters raced through the city's streets. The city's mayor has declared a state of emergency. Hourly rainfall rate went up to an extraordinary 125 mm in the Alto da Serra rain gauge. In Sao Sebastiao, as much as 260 mm of rain fell in 6 hours. All that rain caused rivers to overflow and turned streets into raging torrents of mud and debris. Landslides were reported in 50 parts of the municipality. In one of the worst hit neighbourhood, 80 houses are estimated to have been damaged by the gushing water. This mountainous region is prone to landslides.
