I AM – The Light of the World - Fathom Church - Nathan Deisem
John 8:12-20; 9:1-12…; Psalm 27:1; 1 John 1:5; Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6;

John 8:12-20
12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” 13 So the Pharisees said to him, “You are bearing witness about yourself; your testimony is not true.” (John 5:31) 14 Jesus answered, “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15 You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one. 16 Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17 In your Law it is written that the testimony of two people is true. 18 I am the one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” 19 They said to him therefore, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20 These words he spoke in the treasury, as he taught in the temple; but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come."

• It took place about six months before His death and resurrection. Jesus was in Jerusalem at the Temple during the Feast of Tabernacles teaching in the area of the Temple called the Court of the Women and “the Treasury.” Celebrating God’s guidance of the Israelites during their forty years of wondering in the desert after they left Egypt. God led them by light; a pillar of fire at night and a cloud during the day.

• Those at the temple when Jesus made the statement “I am the Light of the world.” knew exactly what He meant. Jesus was proclaiming His deity, and that His light will never go out. He was promising that if you follow Him you will never walk in darkness, just as the Israelites had the pillar of fire and the lighted cloud that guided them through the desert.

Claims to be GOD:
Psalm 27:1a
1a The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
1 John 1:5
5b God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

Claims to be Messiah:
Isaiah 42:6 (42,49,50,53)
6 “I am the Lord; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations, (FOR THE WORLD)
Isaiah 49:6
5 And now the Lord says, he who formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him; and that Israel might be gathered to him— for I am honored in the eyes of the Lord, and my God has become my strength—
6 He says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to bring back the preserved of Israel;
I will make you as a light for the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth

John Knew What He Was Doing: (John 20:31 “these are written…”)
(Compare Genesis 1:1-4 to John 1:1-5)

John 9:1-7
1 As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 Having said these things, he spit on the ground and made mud with the saliva. Then he anointed the man's eyes with the mud 7 and said to him, “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which means Sent). So he went and washed and came back seeing.

John 12:35-36
35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. 36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.”

APPLICATION
Critical Concept:
Jesus is the Light of the World! He dispels Darkness! Believe in Him and Walk in His light!

1. Jesus is the Light of TRUTH that dispels FALSEHOOD
2. Jesus is the Light of WISDOM that dispels IGNORANCE
3. Jesus is the Light of HOLINESS that dispels SIN
4. Jesus is the Light of JOY that dispels SORROW
5. Jesus is the Light of LIFE that dispels DEATH

But only for those who gaze upon that light & believe! & walk in that light!
