"BAPTISM" Message - (Romans 6:3-11) - Pastor Nathan Deisem - Fathom Church
Pastor Nathan Deisem - Fathom Church - Baptism Message!
After Salvation - Baptism is the most important thing to Churches who seek to make disciples!
1 Corinthians 1:13–16 “13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name. 16 (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. Beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.)”
o I also recognize (and treasure the fact) that many of us here at Fathom Church come from a variety of faith traditions.
• What does the Bible say about Baptism???
THREE QUESTIONS
I - WHO?
o Who does the Bible say should be Baptized? -Willing Believers (Not Babies)
Acts 2:41 “41 So those who received his [Peter’s] word [The Gospel Message] were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.”
Acts 16:29-34 “29 And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. 30 Then he brought them out and said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all who were in his house. 33 And he took them the same hour of the night and washed their wounds; and he was baptized at once, he and all his family. 34 Then he brought them up into his house and set food before them. And he rejoiced along with his entire household that he had believed in God.
Matthew 28:18-20 “18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Acts 8:26-40 “35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning with this Scripture he told him the good news about Jesus. 36 And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” 38 And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.
II - HOW?
Does the Bible show us HOW we should practice Baptism?
• By full body Emersion (Not other means – i.e. Sprinkling)
o The practice of an emersive ceremony predates the N.T.
Three Step Process for a Jewish Proselyte
• Sacrifice
• Circumcision
• Emersion (Mikveh)
o The word Baptizo in Greek, translated “baptize” in the New Testaments, meant to “dip” or “immerse.”
o The word Rantízo in Greek, translated “sprinkle” in the OT / NT.
• Matthew 3:6 “and they were baptized by him IN the river Jordan, confessing their sins.”
• John 3:23 “John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized.”
III - WHY?
Why does the Bible say that we should be Baptized at all?
• For Illustration After Proclamation (Not Salvation)
Romans 6:3-11
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.
o Baptism: Is an act of obedience and a public proclamation. It is a physical ceremony proclaiming and illustrating a spiritual reality. A believer declares that they have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. By entering the Waters of baptism they illustrate how they have died to sin and self, emerging from the waters illustrates how they now live for Christ Jesus!
