Wait for it! An Aquaculture Surprise in Small Pond DIY

It was a wonderful surprise, shocking at first. I noticed it after waiting a minute. It was much bigger than expected. Check out what is in this aquaculture system.

Small ponds provide habitat, a relaxing focus point, and even food. You can raise tilapia, bluegill, catfish, and even prawns in your backyard without much effort. I have even forgotten to feed what lives in this pond for more than a week.

Imagine my shock to see what used to be a few inches now grown. It is almost time to move these fish to a pond. But if you don't have the space for an acre pond, or even a half-acre space, then start like this.

Small pond culture is something that Sepp Holzer talks about in his book "Permaculture." Water is a powerful resource for any small farm, homestead, or estate. Your pond doesn't have to be big. I'm focusing on nursery out fish to stock a larger pond on a farm I work across town. At first, I got in a lot of trouble having this at my house in the city, however, some in the neighborhood have 5,000-gallon ornamental ponds. Don't give up.
