Goodbye by Jeff H. Ulrich - Featuring Hugh Wilson

"Goodbye" is original music of my salvation by and devotion to Christ.

This song of real meaning, Goodbye, comes from the real place of my salvation, heartily sung by a new real friend in Christ, Hugh Wilson, who made possible this expression of inspiration to be shared with all who are in a dark place but desire to feel the sense of peace that comes only from above.

==========

In 1984, I was moved to write this song. At 18 years old, there I sat at an old out-of-tune upright piano as I musically and lyrically poured out my heart. Suffice it to say here, I was working through bitter resentment in me over one of the biggest letdowns of my life.

Although therapeutic to write at the time, the original lyrics were of my bitter heart. I had to live and grow for years before I found meaning that inspired me to write lyrics true to this special music that, now apparent to me, was given from above.

"And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses." - Mark 11:25 (NKJV)

With revised lyrics in hand in this year of 2021, I finally sat down to record the entire orchestration as I had conceived it in 1984. Upon finally hearing its completion after 37 years, I reflected on how good to me and patient God was in that early time of my life when I was most spiritually immature and unworthy. Yet, I was then reaching for God; and I now realize all the more that He sent answers that I would come to understand upon conviction and repentance of my old spirit of unforgiveness.

As for the context of the word, "Goodbye," as used in the title and chorus of this song, Fanny Crosby was apparently in that spirit when she wrote her 1879 hymn, "Take The World, But Give Me Jesus.". In the last verse, she wrote, "Take the world, but give me Jesus. | In His cross my trust shall be, | Till, with clearer, brighter vision, Face to face my Lord I see." Like her meaning, I said my goodbye to a dark life of the world to follow the light of the world, Jesus, whom I am prepared to meet in the sky at His coming where I will clearly see His face with brighter vision.

"Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, 'I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.'" - John 8:12 (NKJV)

I pray that this song of my faith would inspire and strengthen you to overcome the challenges in your life with my Savior.

Song: Goodbye
By: Jeff H. Ulrich
Music and Original Lyrics: 1984
Recording and Revised Lyrics: 2021
Vocals: Hugh Wilson

Lyrics:

~Verse 1~
It was dark where I was broken.
My spirit cried.
Then You came, a gleaming presence,
The source of light.

~Verse 2~
I heard you say how much You love me.
Will You be mine?
Came in my heart. Replaced the sorrow
With joy Divine.

~Bridge 1~
You gave me dreams. You gave me hope.
You gave me songs to sing.
Then in return, with all of my heart,
I gave You all of me.
Your Spirit is here. You’ve lived in my heart
Since I fell to my knees.

~Verse 3~
Are you lost? And are you broken?
Your spirit cries?
There’s a man. He’ll find and heal you.
Ask Him inside.

~Verse 4~
Rejection breaks. Resentment hardens
A bitter heart.
But Jesus mends with love, sweet comfort,
That’s where He starts.

~Bridge 2~
He gives us dreams. He gives us hope.
He gave me songs to sing.
Then in return, with all of my heart,
I gave Him all of me.
His Spirit is here. He's lived in my heart
Since I fell to my knees

~Chorus~
And said Goodbye.
Turned my head and walked away
From life of dark,
To Heaven, His light leads the way.
So when He comes again,
I’ll go to meet Him in the sky.
To the world behind,
I already said, “Goodbye.”

{Repeat Bridge 2 & Chorus}
