Goat Birth Goes Sideways FAST! Can We Save Her?

BIG PROBLEM! Our excitement for new baby goat kids faded quickly when we realized our Nigerian Dwarf doe had a prolapsed uterus. Will she survive?

Brandi Carlile (the goat) is the next doe to kid here on our farm. After our buck, Benji, Brandi and her doeling, Annie Oakley, were the next dairy goats we brought onto our homestead in February 2020. This is Brandi’s first kidding since then and we’re eagerly awaiting a baby or two. Brandi comes from @Anne of All Trades Nashville homestead and has a great milking pedigree, so with two does in milk at the same time we are hoping to ramp up the goat milk production.

On Sunday (Palm Sunday, if you care), during our routine morning chores, we were shocked to find that Brandi had kidded early – one healthy doeling, and one stillborn. We were so excited, until we noticed that something was wrong with Brandi. After a few phone calls and emails back and forth with our vet our fears were confirmed, Brandi had a prolapsed uterus and needed to go into the vet.

It was nerve-wracking experience but we are happy to report that the veterinarian believes Brandi will be able to have babies again and that this shouldn’t be a recurring issue.
