This is RIDICULOUS! Whose Fault is This?

I promise I’m not going to rant. Livestock feed costs are skyrocketing and the supply chain disruptions are starting to affect delivery of things like dairy goat feed. So what do we do? What can we do?

We live on about 10 acres, raising chickens, dairy goats, and a beef steer once a year to put meat in the freezer. We work hard to care for our animals and provide them the best life possible while they’re in our stead. However, the current state of the world is really starting to hit close to home as feed prices are jumping up and supply chain disruptions are keeping feed of the farm store shelves.

For example, as long as we’ve had chickens (about 3 years at this point) layer pellets have been less than $10. Earlier this year they jumped up to $12 for a 50lb bag, and now they’re upwards of $16 per bag. For those of you keeping score that’s a 60% increase in just a few months.

Not only that, but the local co-op that we buy our dairy goat feed from missed a shipment last week. It was supposed to come, but it just didn’t. We give our girls a feed specifically tailored for lactating dairy goats to give them the protein and fat content they need to help boost milk production. Our does are going to start kidding in a couple of weeks. This has us worried that we’re going to need to buy this feed in bulk so we don’t run out.

It’s a weird time to be alive but really we’re thankful for each and every day. We love our lives and we love caring for our animals so we’re going to keep doing whatever it takes to provide for them.
