She thinks she’s SO smart! Who is going to be RIGHT? // VLOG

Goat kidding season is a hectic and exciting time on the farm and two of our does are going to pop in the next week or so. Who is going to be the first to kid – will it be Violet, one of our Nigerian dwarf does, or Bonnie, our Kiko X Savanna meat goat? While we’re in the barn we also dose all nine goats with their annual CD&T vaccine as well as a copper bolus. If you’re excited about baby goats make sure you’re subscribed to the channel so you won’t miss any of those videos!

We dose our goats annually with a CD&T vaccine. CD&T stands for “Clostridium perfringens type C + D and tetanus” – yes, it’s a bit confusing, but the bottom line is this is important for the goats’ health. Because our soil is naturally copper-deficient we also give our goats a copper bolus. Goats need copper for their health (they can actually die if they don’t have enough) and while we set out free choice mineral with copper giving them a bolus ensures that they have enough to stay healthy.

Kidding season is set to kick off in just about a week and we have two does that were bred very close to each other. The gestation period for a goat is between 145-155 days – we use an estimate of 150 days until we know if the doe tends to go earlier or later. When we turned our buck, Benji, in with the girls we witnessed him breed Violet, so we feel very good about her due date of March 8. Bonnie, our Kiko X Savanna meat goat, was showing signs that she was in heat at that time, too, though we never actually saw breeding take place.

After watching these two goats for the past four and a half months Megan is convinced that Bonnie will be the first to kid. Ragon, however, is trusting in the data and what the calendar says. So who is going to be right? Drop your thoughts in the comments!
