Setting up Premier 1 Fence | Electric Net Fence with Solar Charging
We’re installing an electric net fence from Premier 1 Supplies to improve our rotational grazing plan with our dairy goat herd. The fence was easy to put up and we’re using an Intellishock 60 solar charger so we can move the enclosure anywhere in our pasture.
If you’ve watched our channel for long you know that our pasture fences are in not-so-good shape and are not goat-proof. We are slowly making progress on replacing everything with new 4x4 woven wire but we’re nowhere near close to being done with that project. In the mean time we still have goats that need to be contained and after our does kid we need to separate them from our buck until we are ready for him to breed them again.
We picked up this electric netting fence from Premier 1 Supplies to help keep everyone where they are supposed to be. Since our goats are small (most of them are Nigerian Dwarfs except for Bonnie and Clyde, our two meat goat lawnmowers) we opted for the 35” tall ElectroNet 9/35/12. It was a little cheaper than the 42” variety and it will suit our needs just fine. We also grabbed a solar charger so we can use this system anywhere on our property.
Setup was pretty easy though we did have to backtrack once as we figured out exactly how big this new temporary paddock could be. We also had to be mindful of tall grass – according to the manufacturer grass over 4” tall can interfere with the electrical current, thereby completely defeating the purpose of the netting. Our littlest goats, Minnie Pearl and Calamity Jane, can actually squeeze through the net, but it didn’t take them long to learn to stay in.
We’re only a few short weeks away from the spring green-up and we are incredibly excited to see green grass growing in our pastures once again. Being able to better implement our rotational grazing plan will make huge long-term differences on our farm. It’s a busy time of year and we’re thankful for every moment we get to enjoy here on our farm – we’re thankful that you’re here, too. See y’all soon!
