BAD BEEF! They JUMPED the Fence!

Our new freezer beef steers jumped the fence and ran off! This story is crazy. Remember the nursery rhyme “Hey diddle, diddle, the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon”? She was probably a Charolais.

Some days go better than others, and this past weekend was full of “others.” Recently we purchased two beef steers to finish on our farm before they head to the butcher for processing. We kept them in the barn for a week so they would calm down and get used to us (and the feed bucket) before we turned them out on pasture. However, 30 minutes after they left the barn for the first time, one of them jumped the fence and ran off, and the other steer was close behind.

It made for a really bad day full of stress and worry, and that bad day stretched out into the whole weekend, and then it bled over into the first of the week as well.

The first steer (“Little Richard”) jumped in the field with the neighbor’s cattle and he settled down quickly. Three days later we had a couple cowboys wrangle him into a trailer and bring him back to the homestead. However, steer #2 (who we have named “Big Richard”) didn’t quit running until he was miles away from the house. When he was finally captured down the road he had travelled nearly 5 miles. Big thanks to Shad Seals at Seals Quarter Horses & Livestock for his help throughout this process – it’s good to know people who can help when things get a little (okay, a lot) crazy.

It can get a little hectic around here but this is our life and we want to share it with you. I will leave you with the following lyrics from the Corb Lund song “Cows Around”.

“What else can make the bishop swear like a sailor might?
What else can cause such tension between a man and his wife?
What else could ever bring all these enhancements to your life?
May you always have cows around.”
