A Caution About Liquid Fertilizer For Dog Owners

If you are using a biodigester to create your own liquid fertilizer, then here's a word of warning. The liquid smells like stale cow urine mixed with dead animals -- and dogs love to roll in it.

A biodigester turns organic waste into liquid fertilizer using microbial activity while exhausting methane gas. You can cook or heat with the captured gas. It even works to reduce manure into safe to handle nutrients.

I use liquid fertilizer to break down woody materials, feed the soil, and inoculate compost piles. It's a lovely material. The problem is that dogs love to roll in it every chance they get.

Fortunately, Zola was behaving today. I had put down her lease on the other side of the garden, she slowly crept to the smell. Even blind with canine dementia, she was drawn to the odor.

Don't worry; humans cannot smell the odor after 24-hours or so. However, it attracts dogs and repels deer and rabbits. It smells like death and will stay with anything you spill it on when fresh.
