Is Modern Science Fiction Trending Towards DARKER Stories?

Science Fiction has had a weird history. It started as Camp Fare a' la Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, then it got serious by the 1950s, then it got back to camp in the late 1970s-early 1980s, then went back to being dark and gritty. Is this shift toward darker stories a good thing or has the genre been too dark for too long?
