In this Travel Edition of Guitar Discoveries, I tune my trusty Martin Backpacker to Nashville Open D tuning. What?!! Yes!
With a Nashville string set that brings the bottom four string up one full octave, I then tune the guitar in Open D. And voila! A magical dulcimer-like sound that makes many songs almost angelic and fun to play.
Follow me to Northwest Arkansas for a hotel room performance of "Odorono," a brilliant novelty song by The Who, from their 1967 concept album The Who Sell Out. Written (with tongue firmly in cheek) by Pete Townshend, and highlighting his extraordinary gift for melody and irony.
