Part 2 of our interview with Professor Shedel picks up with the long reign of Emperor Franz Joseph I (1848-1916) and the newly reconstituted Habsburg state that emerged in 1867. Professor Shedel walks us through the critical political and social developments during this last half century of the empire's life, including the antics of parliamentary governance, the importance of the rule of law, and the rights of the national groups that made up this multiethnic entity. Armen and Professor Shedel also discuss some of the similarities and differences between Austria-Hungary and her neighbor, the Ottoman Empire. Finally, for the Hollywood segment of the episode Armen, Michael, and Professor Shedel move on to discuss what they most liked and disliked about Sam Mendes' blockbuster World War I film "1917."
