• Is 58:1-2 True worship was more than religious ritual, going to the Temple every day, fasting, and listening to Scripture readings. These people missed the point of a living, vital relationship with God. He doesn't want us to act pious when we have unforgiven sin in our heart and continue our sinful lifestyle. More important even than correct worship and doctrine is genuine compassion for the oppressed, the poor, and the helpless. The hypocritical religionists delight in approaching God in ritual worship, but their hearts are far from Him. God knows True Worshippers, make your worship true.

• Is 58:3-4 Observe how possible it is to have a fondness for ordinances, but to be void of a spirit of grace in them. Outward observances are easily followed; but heart-renewing, heart-felt sorrow for sin, consists in somewhat more than these. The accusations, you … exploit all your laborers and you fast for strife and debate, expose the hypocrisy of the people’s worship. Instead of ceasing their normal pursuits and setting the day aside to fast and pray, they strike with the fist the laborer who does not work. This is unacceptable to God.

• Is. 58:5 God was asking if they suppose that such can be the fast commanded by Him—a fast which is expressly called "a day for a man to afflict his soul"? Is afflicting one’s soul simply bowing down one’s head as a bulrush, and making one’s couch on sackcloth and ashes? Surely it is much more than this. We shall consider God's definition of a true fast tomorrow.
