Just days after Defense Secretary Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) committed to refitting the Eurofighter it doesn't love, Saab put a new package price for the Gripen fighter jet on the table. Sweden wants to be the dominant power in the skies over Austria again.

In the duel with Eurofighter, Saab is unbeaten: For the first time on Wednesday, Sweden named the all-inclusive price "Krone" for a package consisting of twelve Gripen C (single-seater) and two Gripen D (two-seater), including the first spare parts and the simulator itself. Saab returns to play as the next fighter jet for Austria. And that's just days after Minister Tanner publicly took hold of the Eurofighter.

A third cheaper than the Eurofighter?
At an acquisition cost of EUR 900 million and a cost of EUR 23,000 per flying hour, the jet will still be about a third cheaper than the Eurofighter over 15 years. For comparison: our 15 Eurofighters, which we have flown since 2007, have been paid off, so no more acquisition costs.
