In today's video, you will find out what your eyes can say about your health.

A new study in the United Kingdom found that dry eye disease can lead to other general health issues. Did you know that?

According to the National Eye Institute, almost 16 million Americans suffer from dry eyes. The Association of Optometrists of London says that one in every four people in the United Kingdom has this disease.

The study from the University of Southampton revealed that patients with chronic dry eyes tend to have a lower quality of life.

These findings showed that people with dry eyes report a decline in visual function and work productivity. They also have more difficulty completing daily tasks.

But you must be asking yourself: what is dry eye disease?

Dry eyes happen when your eyes don't produce enough tears or produce low-quality tears.

Although dry eyes are uncomfortable, there are many treatments available.

Common symptoms include irritation and redness in the eyes, blurry view, rough or burning sensation, extreme sensitivity to light, eye pain, stringy mucus inside or around the eyes.

Other common symptoms are watery eyes and pain when wearing contact lenses.

The causes for dry eyes are diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid and lupus, exposure to smoke, wind or dry weather, wearing contact lenses for long periods, and staring too long into computer or phone screens.

Another cause for dry eyes seems to be being more than 65 years, especially for women.

So, according to this research, your eyes can tell a lot more about your health than you thought.

If you have dry eyes, seek an ophthalmologist to help you in the best way possible.
