On March 17, 1855, the capital of the state of Sergipe was founded: Aracaju.

The name has Tupi origin and means Cashew Tree of Parrots. The law that created the capital also elevated the old town of Santo Antônio do Aracaju to the category of municipality.

The location was chosen as Sergi's administrative headquarters by the president of the Province, Inácio Joaquim Barbos and was one of the cities chosen by the president of Brazil. Its design resembled a chessboard.

The new capital was born out of economic necessity, to replace São Cristóvão, which was the former seat of the Captaincy of Sergipe, but was far from the sea. The change responded to the pressure of planters, who demanded the construction of a port for the outflow of the sugar harvest.

Aracaju is a coastal city, crossed by rivers such as Sergipe and Poxim.

The town transformed into the capital of Sergipe was inhabited by a cacique called Serigy, considered cruel and feared and more than two hundred years before the settlement of Aracaju.

The capital of Sergipe is considered a city with lifestyle habits more like men and with the lowest rate of smokers in Brazil. The cost of living is also indicated as one of the lowest in the country.
