Soto Uke: Where Does It Fit In The Blocking Matrix?

The principles of movement that connect the blocking techniques (uke waza) in kihon are generally easy enough to see, especially the connection between Jodan Uke, Uchi Uke, Gedan Barai and Uchi Uke-Gedan Barai. But Soto Uke seems to be out on its own, even though in tournaments it is more often used than the other kihon blocking techniques.

Generally speaking, we know the kihon form of the blocks and follow it accurately. So we have to take that formal technique and interpret it correctly so it becomes realistically useable under pressure against a non-compliant opponent.

Today I am looking at the role Soto Uke plays in connection to the other blocks.
