This is a photo collection of that day. Most of the images were taken by Karel Poort. The uprising was confined to Havana.
“On this date in history, August 5th, 1994, thousands of #Cubans took to the streets in protest of the misery and oppression forced upon them by a tyrannical and despotic Castro dictatorship. The Castro dictatorship came dangerously close to losing control and power if not for the repressive forces of the regime that violently took back the streets and quashed an uprising.
Twenty-seven years after El Maleconazo, a much bigger uprising across the entire island took place. And the exact same murderous regime is using violence and oppression to regain control The misery and oppression on the island today is no different from what existed back in 1994. The violent repression continues along with the imprisonment, torture, and murder of innocent, peaceful dissidents has not ceased.” Babalu Blog
One of the reasons for the revolt was also the Tugboat 13 de marzo massacre on July 13, 1994, where 37 civilians were killed by the military for attempting to escape. Among them were 10 children with a 6 month old baby.
