Austria interested in SAAB JAS39 Gripen fighter jet - Cooperate with SAAB

Saab serves the army with the Gripen as a replacement for the Eurofighter.

Eurofighters are expensive to operate and technically out of date. Swedish manufacturer Saab calculated the chances of an intergovernmental agreement for Gripen.

The war in Ukraine has drawn attention to the importance of airspace security in the event of a conflict - and to the shortcomings that the Austrian armed forces have in the region. As is well known, Austria had to rely on 15 Eurofighters, which were delivered after a highly questionable deal at SPÖ's request in 2017 without the essential elements of self-defense, night operations capability and long-range weapons. The Eurofighter retrofit from phase one and even the procurement of spare parts is considered very expensive, because important components are no longer produced for the first series aircraft that are already parked with other armed forces.

If one currently calculates the cost of around 65,000 euros per hour of flying the Eurofighter, this could become even more expensive in the years to come. For the upgrade alone, 200 million euros should be appreciated.

Informal new offer for now
In this situation, Saab comes into play: The Swedish company, which lost the Eurofighter with its Gripen in 2002, has set up an Austrian subsidiary - Saab Aeronautics Austria GmbH - and is trying to create the mood for the Gripen. With reference to Hungary and the Czech Republic, which each generate 2,000 flight hours a year with 14 Gripens, a Gripen solution is also offered to the armed forces.
