Marching bands’ Halftime Festival rumbles the stands

Horns blaring, dancing to the beating of drums, orbs of light, and twirling fire batons were once again on display with the return of the Imperial Valley Music Educator’s Association’s (IVMEA) Halftime Festival Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Cal Jones Field in El Centro.Show more

Local high school marching bands from Brawley, Holtville, Southwest, Imperial, and Central Union High School all strutted their stuff on the fields with their respective drill teams, tall flags, and some with baton twirlers or pit orchestral percussion, in their own respective football halftime show styles as they have done throughout the fall 2021 football season.

Event founder and Central Union High School Great Spartan Band Director Renee Baker said the annual event — in its 23rd year after a one-year absence due to the COVID pandemic — not only still serves its original purpose of allowing local high school marching bands the opportunity to perform their halftime show, but it also serves as a way to get back to normal.
